“CHARLOTTE KICKOFF NIGHT” IS BACK FOR YEAR 10
THE START OF THE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL SEASON
Four of the top NC teams will be featured in the 10th annual Charlotte Kickoff Night
Charlotte, NC — Teall Properties Group (TPG) & OrthoCarolina are proud to announce the match-ups, date and location of the 10th annual “Charlotte Kickoff Night powered by OrthoCarolina.” This first-class community event continues to serve as the highly anticipated start to the high school football season. Keeping with its roots, the “Charlotte Kickoff Night powered by OrthoCarolina” will be played at recently renovated Memorial Stadium in the heart of Uptown Charlotte on Thursday evening, August 17, 2023.
“OrthoCarolina is honored to be part in the 10th annual Charlotte Kickoff Night,” said Dr. Dana P. Piasecki, Surgeon and Director of the Sports, Shoulder & Elbow Fellowship Program at OrthoCarolina. “For a decade, OrthoCarolina and TPG have been celebrating student-athletes, coaches, parents and schools that make our community special. Apart from being fun, the pursuit of athletic excellence literally brings out the best in all of us. It teaches us how to win and lose together… the key there being together. It’s a road map for life as a community. We look forward to celebrating 10 years of this signature event as we kick off high school football for the 2023 season!”
Game One, scheduled for 5:15 p.m., will be a rematch of the 2022 NCHSAA 4A 2nd Round playoff featuring two distinguished football programs: the Weddington High School Warriors (Matthews, NC) against the Cox Mill High School Chargers (Concord, NC). Cox Mill will have the opportunity to avenge last year’s playoff loss and play their first game under the leadership of new head coach Breon Holmes. Homes starts his tenure with the Chargers after three seasons with Ardrey Kell where he had many coaching roles. Under Holmes Ardrey Kell was known for having a high-powered offense which should bring excitement to the Cox Mill fan base. The Weddington Warriors were one field goal away from playing for a state championship last season. Led by Senior Quarterback Tyler Budge the Warriors are primed again to be a top high school football team in North Carolina. Budge has received multiple Division I college scholarship offers.
Game Two, slated to kickoff at 8:00pm, will showcase two of the top 4A schools in the state over the past couple decades. A matchup that might also be classified as a post-season type, will be featured in week one of the regular season. The Mallard Creek Mavericks (Charlotte, NC) will suit up and host the Independence High School Patriots (Charlotte, NC). The Mallard Creek football program has a rich history of producing Division I student-athletes. After an 8-4 record last season, the Mavericks are hungry to get back to the state championship after winning three titles in the past decade. Independence’s football dynasty took place in the early 2000’s with an unprecedented seven straight 4A NCHSAA state championships and saw a resurgence in 2022. The team was able to find the winning formula again under the direction of Head Coach DJ McFadden who was the Patriots’ starting quarterback for two of those seven straight championships. The Patriots’ roster is full of talent including three-star defensive back Quentin Reddish. Reddish has 20 college scholarship offers including numerous from Division I Power 5 programs.
“We are beyond excited to celebrate a landmark 10th consecutive year of conducting this event for the greater Charlotte football community,” said James Companion of Teall Properties Group, with great enthusiasm. “We take great pride in enhancing the high school experience for the participating kids and their communities. None of this could be possible without the amazing support over the years from our great partners at OrthoCarolina.”
A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools Middle School Athletics and Women’s Athletics.
